Minister of Foreign Affairs Discusses Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation and Coordination on Regional Issues with His Algerian Counterpart

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, met on Monday, 22 June 2026, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Attaf, on the sidelines of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, held in Amman, Jordan.

During the meeting, the two ministers discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries and expand avenues of joint cooperation in a manner that serves their mutual interests. They also reviewed the outcomes of official visits and exchanges between the two sides.

The ministers further explored opportunities for cooperation in the oil and gas sectors, in light of both countries’ membership in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), as well as prospects for collaboration in the field of electric power and benefiting from Algeria’s advanced expertise in turbine manufacturing and energy production projects.

The two sides agreed to convene the Iraqi-Algerian Joint Committee during the last quarter of the current year, under the chairmanship of the Ministers of Oil of both countries, with the aim of enhancing economic and investment cooperation and developing bilateral partnerships.

The parties also discussed mechanisms to facilitate the movement of citizens between the two countries and to initiate a technical and legal dialogue aimed at simplifying visa procedures. They further emphasized the need to expedite the completion of the necessary procedures for signing an agreement exempting holders of diplomatic passports from entry visa requirements.

The meeting addressed the latest regional and international developments, including political and security developments in the region, the impact of global economic challenges on regional countries, and the exchange of views on issues of mutual interest.

Both sides affirmed their support for the ongoing negotiations in Switzerland between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, stressing the importance of prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy in addressing crises and promoting regional security and stability.

At the conclusion of the meeting, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein extended an official invitation to his Algerian counterpart to visit Baghdad. H.E. Mr. Ahmed Attaf expressed his appreciation for the invitation and confirmed his intention to accept it at the earliest opportunity.
