Foreign Minister Discusses Regional Developments with His German Counterpart and Reaffirms Rejection of the Expansion of the War

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, discussed on Monday, 2 March 2026, in a phone call with Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, H.E. Mr. Johann Wadephul, the developments in the region and their repercussions on Iraq and neighboring countries. H.E. the German Foreign Minister affirmed his country’s support for the Republic of Iraq and its solidarity with it amid the current challenges, expressing concern over the escalating tensions and the attacks that have targeted Iraqi territory. H.E. also noted that the scope of the war appears to be expanding in more than one direction.
During the call, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein raised fundamental questions regarding the objectives behind the continued military escalation, asking whether the goal was limited to destroying Iran’s nuclear program, despite the fact that negotiations had been ongoing and were making progress. H.E. also questioned the motives behind expanding the scope of the war and why the Iraqi and Gulf arenas had become part of the theaters of military operations.
H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein stressed that attacks launched by both parties to the conflict against the Republic of Iraq are condemned and unacceptable, emphasizing the need to halt attacks targeting the Gulf states as well and to work toward keeping the countries of the region outside the circle of confrontation.
H.E. further underscored that the Federal Republic of Germany, by virtue of its strong relations with the United States administration, is capable of playing a pivotal role in pushing toward a ceasefire, stressing the importance of Europe assuming a key role in efforts aimed at ending the escalation and halting attacks, particularly those affecting the Republic of Iraq.
