Foreign Affairs Minister Discusses Enhancing Political and Security Cooperation with German MPs on the Sidelines of the Munich Security Conference

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, met on Sunday, 15 February 2026, with members of the German Bundestag, Mr. Jürgen Hardt, Foreign Policy Spokesperson of the ruling bloc, and Mr. Thomas Erndl, Defense Policy Spokesperson of the ruling bloc. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference.

At the outset of the meeting, H.E. the Minister underscored the depth of bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the Federal Republic of Germany and the Iraqi Government’s commitment to further developing and enhancing them across various fields in a manner that serves the interests of both friendly countries. H.E. expressed appreciation for Germany’s support to Iraqi forces in the fight against terrorism, as well as its contribution to the Government’s efforts to achieve stability and development.

H.E. the Minister also highlighted Iraq’s efforts to transfer detainees affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS from Syrian territory to Iraqi prisons, ensuring that they do not pose a renewed security threat to Iraq or the wider region. H.E. called on Germany and the European Union to provide the necessary support to Iraq, given the significant financial burdens associated with hosting more than 5,700 detainees to date, the majority of whom are of Arab, European, and other nationalities.

Furthermore, H.E. the Minister reviewed the latest developments in Syria, the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, and the anticipated round of talks to be held in Geneva. H.E. reaffirmed Iraq’s support for international mediation efforts aimed at preventing a slide into a new conflict in the Middle East and the serious security and economic repercussions that could result.

For their part, the two German parliamentarians commended the Iraqi Government’s efforts in transferring ISIS detainees and emphasized the importance of continued coordination, communication, and enhanced partnership between the two countries, particularly in the political and security spheres.
